The Legend of Europa
The Legend of Europa is a new, international collaboration, building on the success of the 2020-22 Cre-Actors project, which explored different approaches to devising intercultural performance. The partner organisations from that project were: Border Crossings (Ireland), Teatro dell’Argine (Italy), Théâtre du Soleil (France), and The Fence (Sweden). For The Legend of Europa, we are joined by Riksteatern, the National Touring Theatre of Sweden.
We are now choosing to explore the EUROPA myth because it feels especially relevant at this moment, as debates about national and European identities are heating up across our continent. Migration and diversity have become focal points for passionate rhetoric, whether supporting compassion for refugees and trafficked workers or opposing perceived threats to culture, order, and prosperity. Our project revisits the foundational myth of our continent to understand its current upheaval.
Europa was a princess from Tyre, located in what is now Lebanon, who was abducted and raped by Zeus, the king of the gods, in the form of a white bull. Her brothers searched for her across the continent that was later named after her, but they failed to reach Crete, where she was supposed to become the mother of the Minoan dynasty. This family rose to dominate the Mediterranean, particularly by demanding tribute from the citizens of Athens, who sent young people annually as sacrifices to the Minotaur, the hybrid bull-man that inhabited the labyrinth beneath the palace of Knossos.
This vivid and evocative story will serve as the foundation for a series of exploratory workshops, guiding us toward a major new theater production, which we plan to premiere in 2027-28. The play will have a preview at the end of 2026 at Riksteatern in Stockholm, Sweden.
Centrum för Dramatik
The Centre for Dramatic Writing consists of professional playwrights, scriptwriters, and translators who produce content for stage, film, radio, TV, and other media. The organization has about 300 members, and the number continues to grow steadily.
The main goal of the Centre for Dramatic Writing is to connect writers with potential clients. Its members primarily collaborate with theaters, film companies, and TV production firms. Many are also active in other industries with skills are highly valued in areas such as information technology, video games, and exhibitions. In these sectors, the Centre for Dramatic Writing plays a vital role in broadening the opportunities for scriptwriters to apply their expertise. The projects offered by the Centre are not only designed to provide a livelihood but also aim to give practitioners opportunities to showcase their artistic talents in new settings.
The Centre for Dramatic Writing is closely affiliated with Dramatikerförbundet (The Writers’ Guild of Sweden).
The Board includes representatives from Dramatikerförbundet and writers involved in both stage and screen productions.

Eurodram
EURODRAM is a European network for contemporary drama and translation, comprising more than 300 members organized into 30 language committees. The main goal of the network is to promote the translation of contemporary plays from Europe, Central Asia, and the Mediterranean, making them accessible to theatre professionals and audiences, in the spirit of independence, equality, and linguistic diversity. In January 2026, Marie Persson-Hedenius and I took the initiative to form a Swedish-language committee and to publish the first call for original Swedish plays. The fence
The Fence is an international network for working playwrights and those involved in making playwriting happen - across Europe and beyond. It is 20 years old.
The network functions as a space for thinking, existing, and taking action. The Fence seeks to create pathways for playwrights to find work opportunities beyond their own country's borders and infrastructure. The primary goal was to develop a network focused on building relationships rather than merely trading scripts and translations, enabling people to come together and collaboratively decide what they want to do. As of May 2025, the network includes 284 members from 55 countries.
I attended my first Fence meeting in Istanbul in 2007 and was inspired by meeting playwrights and dramaturgs from Europe, the Middle East, and America. Some of them have become close friends and colleagues over the years. I’ve attended subsequent meetings in Romania, Germany, France, The United States, Lithuania, Slovenia, and most recently in The United Kingdom.
In 2018, I helped the network register as a non-profit organisation based in Stockholm, Sweden. This enables us to apply for European funding and to initiate projects. The Fence is curated and directed by Jonathan Meth.
The current board includes Oladipo Agboluaje, Fred Fortas, Amelia Parenteau, Kim Komljanec, Edward (Buffalo) Bromberg, Duska Radosavljevic, and Sara Shaarawi.
